Air New Zealand - Inspiring Journeys

 *

Company Profile: Air New Zealand
Company Profile: Air New ZealandAviation is the classic example of a true global industry. Jumbo-sized cargo airplanes haul freight across the globe, while smaller passenger jets whisking businessmen and vacationers to exotic locales. It’s hard to argue against aviation’s successes in making our World smaller. Regardless of where you plan to live, universal laws of business are in practice from one country to another. For example, among other job categories, all successful air carriers strive to hire the right engineering and maintenance staff. Safety is a priority and airlines cannot afford to have incidents or accidents cut into their profitability. So, proper applicant screening, adequate training and adherence to company safety policies go a long way in the airline business.

Working Down Under
A good case study is Air New Zealand. The international carrier operates a strong maintenance division that works on in-house and outsourced engineering work. The airline operates several divisions within the maintenance division. For example, Air New Zealand Engineering Services (ANZES) is a major supplier of aircraft and component MRO (maintenance, repair and overhaul) services with customers in New Zealand, Australia, Asia, the Americas and Europe. Their one-stop facilities offer experienced technical design services for wide-body, narrow-body and regional aircraft in the civil and defense markets.

Short Haul Remodelling

Another of the carrier’s divisions is Air New Zealand Gas Turbines - a wholly owned entity of Air New Zealand Limited – houses a depot facility based at the Auckland International Airport. Their field service teams assist customers in the North Sea, Africa, North and South America and Asia Pacific regions. Air New Zealand Gas Turbines also carry out piece part and modular maintenance for the GE F404 engine. Other engineering groups specialize in aircraft interiors-related projects such as the airline’s NZ$50 million goal to equip its 13 Airbus A320s and five Boeing 767 aircraft with individual on-demand personal entertainment screens. The in-flight entertainment upgrade will give customers on the A320s and 767s access to more than 450 hours of movie, television programs and audio.

‘Road’ Service for Airplanes
When a customer requires depot level support, Air New Zealand’s field service team can be on site to remove the engine, and then take charge of coordinating its safe transportation for repair or overhaul. Engineers will reinstall the engine if required by the customer. Think of it as ‘road service’ for airplanes. With over 2,000 staff, ANZES is one of few aviation engineering businesses in the world certified to manage the field service along with major upgrade on a sizeable Boeing 747 fleet.

New Long Haul Fleet and Product

The company also has completed a major business transformation that has enabled them to compete on a world stage. That proved an immediate success, winning a heavy maintenance contract from a European-based airline. “Right now, we are building for the future, and we are looking for people keen to start or develop a career in an industry with a global growth rate of nearly 10 percent a year,” explains Chris Nassenstein, Air New Zealand’s General Manager of Technical Operations. He add one more important note,” A 'can do' attitude is essential.” We invite you to watch a short video highlighting Air New Zealand and its engineering department.
